Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose concrete for a table or counter?
Concrete is beautiful, practical, strong, and durable. Concrete comes in a slurry, and through creative formwork, it can be poured into any shape and "cure" into practically any solid mass. You can imbed meaningful objects into it; you can stamp it while it is still impressionable – and after curing, you can stain it, grind it, or polish it. Concrete can resemble granite, or it can have the soft feel of soap stone. The possibilities for practical uses, aesthetic applications and creative expression are endless. Each piece is unique – no two are alike. It is custom form-work, shaped to express your personality and tastes.

Are concrete counters less expensive than granite or marble?
The prices are similar to that of granite or marble, however concrete counters are totally customizable. Concrete can take so many different shapes and finishes. You can even embed heating coils for an additional heating source.

What about colors?
There's a wide array of colors and finishes to choose from. For an even-colored appearance, you can choose an integral color that gets added to the mix in liquid form. Or we can apply a color stain to the finished product for more of a "watercolor" look.

Are concrete counters sealed?
After the concrete has had time to cure, we apply a two step sealing process. First we apply a food-safe penetrating sealer, which leaves the concrete surface impenetrable to other liquids. Concrete by nature is a big sponge. The second sealer is then applied to the surface only if a high glossy look is desired. This sealer can be reapplied if the counter gets scratched over time.

Do concrete counters stain?
Acids (especially red wine, lemon juice, and vinegar) will etch the surface if not cleaned up right away. The sealers will help resist stains, but they aren't acid-proof and won't make your counter impervious to stains.

Do concrete counters crack or chip?
Normal everyday use will not cause any chips or cracks. Just as marble or granite, concrete corners will chip and crack if struck by a hard object. Hairline cracks can also develop, they are inherent characteristics of concrete, and they are not structural failures.

Can I place a hot pot directly on the concrete surface – and cut on it?
It is not recommended. It may scratch the surface – and, most of all, it will dull your knives. Likewise, if you place a very hot item directly on the surface, it could damage the surface and/or the sealer. We can create an area next to the stove with raised brass strip inlays for ‘cooling’ pots or pans. Concrete becomes more heat tolerant as it hardens with age, as early as 2 to 3 months after pouring.

How do I clean my concrete counter?
To clean your concrete floors or counters we recommend an Ammonium-free cleanser, such as Simple Green or Dr. Bonner’s.

Does concrete last forever?
Concrete is an ancient natural material. The Romans used it to build their Coliseum, their baths and aqueducts – and many of them are still standing today, over 2,000 years later. Concrete is a natural and lasting product. It is harder than most stones and gets even harder with age. We use steel reinforcement and different aggregates to maximize strength. Our concrete surfaces are designed to withstand even the most brutal of lifestyles.

Concrete has proven itself as a perfect medium in both exterior and interior spaces — with earthy or elegant walls, stamped patios and walkways, benches, tables, fireplaces, water features, kitchens and bathrooms, counters and sinks. The possibilities for creative applications are endless.
